KRK ISLAND

The Krk Island is the northernmost island in the Mediterranean, located in the Kvarner Bay. It is the largest island in the Adriatic, with an area of ​​409.9 km2. Around the island are app. twenty islets, cliffs and reefs. Krk is the island with the largest number of populated places, there are a total of 68. It is located in a zone of temperate and mild Mediterranean climate. The average summer temperature is 23o C, the average summer sea temperature is 20o C.

The life of the island of Krk in history can still be traced through the symbolism of the number seven.

In the 7th Century the Croats inhabited the island; the seventh in a row was Prince Frankopan, the last prince of Krk; the island was successfully defended against pirates seven times. There are also seven administrative units: the town of Krk and the municipalities of Omišalj, Malinska, Punat, Baška, Vrbnik and Dobrinj.

  • Due to its peculiarities, the island of Krk was given the name Golden Island in antiquity;
  • The Baška Plate was built on the island of Krk in 1100.;
  • Krk Folklore Festival, founded in Omišalj in 1935.  is the oldest manifestation of its kind in Croatia;
  • The island of Krk is one of the sunniest places in Europe with 2,500 hours of sunshine a year;
  • 300 km of hiking and cycling trails stretch along the island of Krk.
